For What It's Worth: My Opinion on 2016 Golden Globes Red Carpet Fashion

I know, I know, it's another roundup of Golden Globes fashion. But I'm sure many of you have been waiting patiently to hear my thoughts on the subject... Yes..? Anyone..?

I can summarize my thoughts for the celebrities who got it right with a few key phrases: "Jewel Tones", "Keep it Simple", "Proper Fit".

Want to make it work on the red carpet? First, pick a colour that flatters your skin tone. Thank goodness there were only a handful of attendees who chose that blah flesh tone that looks terrible on 99% of caucasian women. Second, don't try too hard; simplicity has its merits. If you try too hard it shows, and that's just not good. And finally, attend as many dress fittings as required to get the fit right. It makes me physically uncomfortable to watch a woman constantly adjust her dress, pulling it up or tugging it down. Always take a pass on an ill fitting gown.

With that said, these were my favourite gowns of this year's Golden Globes:

Jennifer Lopez looked stunning in this Giambattista Valli gown.
Do you see what I'm talking about: Colour! Simplicity! Fit!

Jaimie Alexander in Genny. I love the deep V, it's risky, and yet flattering.
Not to mention that emerald green complements her dark hair and green eyes.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Zuhair Murad. Another flattering deep V neckline.
The metallic fabric keeps the dress interesting.

Olivia Wilde wearing a Michael Kors Collection gown. Such lovely sparkle!!
This halter neck gown with plunging deep V neckline fits like a glove.

Julianne Moore in Tom Ford. The fit of this dress is absolute perfection!
This sapphire column gown sparkles from every angle.

Kate Bosworth in Dolce & Gabbana. More sparkle!! More colour!!
Doesn't Kate look pretty in pink?

Amy Adams in Atelier Versace. The designers at Versace know how to fit a woman.
This dress walks the line between simple & sparkle.

Kate Winslet in Ralph Lauren. Simple always wins.
The impeccable fit and strong shade of  sapphire make it work.

Rachel Bloom in Christian Siriano. Jewel Tone: Check! Simplicity: Check! Perfect fit: Check!
Bonus points to Rachel for the most enthusiastic acceptance speech.

Emmy Rossum in Armani Prive, accentuated by the Van Cleef & Arpels "Thetis" necklace.
The simple strapless gown relies on bold colour for a boost.

Sophia Bush in Narciso Rodriguez. Another perfect fit. She looks comfortable and it shows.
I kinda wish it wasn't black, but hey, it still makes my top 11.

Golden Globes Red Carpet Arrivals: What I Loved

I like to form opinions about my favourite red carpet fashions before the mainstream media gets in my ear so that I stay true to my own sense of style. Hence, I'm quick out of the gate today with my choices for best of the red carpet. I love that there was a lot of colour on the Golden Globes carpet - in particular I have a soft spot for the yellows. Of course metallics always work for awards season, and the neutral black & whites are always crowd pleasers. Here's what I loved on this first big red carpet of the Hollywood awards season.

Naomi Watts in bold chartreuse.
Column dress by Gucci.

Leslie Mann shines in sunny yellow.
Sequin dress by KAUFMANFRANCO.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum in buttercup yellow.
Flowing gown by Carolina Herrera.

Felicity Jones chose a rich teal.
Gorgeous traditional gown by Christian Dior.

 Julia Louis-Dreyfus in shimmering white
One shoulder dress by Narciso Rodriguez

Kate Hudson in a sexy white number.
Fishtail halter by Versace

Jennifer Lopez in metallic gold.
Cape & Dress by Zuhair Murad.

Julianne Moore in metallic + feathers.
Gown by Givenchy Couture.

Reese Witherspoon sparkles!
Strapless Sheath Dress by Calvin Klein.

Sienna Miller wears a beaded & embroidered blush.
Most visually interesting dress  by Miu Miu.

Emma Stone mixes metallic & black.
Jumpsuit by Lanvin.

Jennifer Anniston in classic black (that fits beautifully).
Sequin Halter by Saint Laurent.

I wasn't going to name the worst dresses, but these are just too tempting!

Claire Danes in Valentino. Ugh.

Keira Knightley in Chanel. Double Ugh.

Golden Globes: What Happened to Colour?

Awards season and the red carpet brings many clues as to what we'll soon see on the racks at our favourite clothing boutiques. I was hoping for a lot more colour at this year's Golden Globes, but instead there were a lot of white, pale nude and flesh toned dresses. Some were indeed beautiful gowns, but it seemed like a safe choice for the actresses who didn't want to risk making a fashion faux pas. I've given each a rating from (1) to (10) based on nothing more than my own personal opinion.

Elle Macpherson in Zac Posen (10)

Jessica Chastain in Givenchy (9)

Giuiliana Rancic (8)

Some of the slightly braver nominees and presenters appeared on the red carpet with a touch of metallic sparkle added to their otherwise neutral choices.

Salma Hayek in Gucci (8)

Nicole Richie in Julien Macdonald (7)

Nicole Kidman in Versace (7)

Lea Michele in Marchesa (6)

My personal thanks go out to all of the actresses who took a chance and expressed some personality with jewel tones!! Sapphire Blue, Ruby Red, Emerald Green and Citrine Yellow - now we're talking!!

And of course, the moment you've all been waiting for, the Overall Category for Best Dress and Worst Dress. Without further ado, here are my top 3 and bottom 3 picks:

Claire Danes in J. Mendel (10)

Jessica Alba in Gucci (10)

Charlize Theron in Dior Haute Couture (10)

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Monique Lhuillier (0)

Missi Pyle (0)

Sharon Osbourne (0)

And I can't resist just one more photo, which I'll classify under "Honourable Mention" for the most unique dress design:
