InVU Drapery Event: Decorate for the Holidays

This Saturday, inVU hosted a Decorate for the Holidays event at their Mississauga location. Thanks to all of the wonderful ladies at inVU for hosting such a great event!! The attendees received some helpful advice and tips about how to add just the right amount of holiday spirit to your home, without going beyond your budget.

InVU President, Lisa Nicholl, shares her holiday decor tips with the gathered guests. Notice the beautifully styled table in the foreground, which is simple to put together. Sparkly votive holders, crystal stars, clear glass cake plates, and an assortment of snow white pine cones make up this tablescape.

In the next vignette, the addition of a feather wreath over the mirror, a collection of pine cones and ornaments in a fabulous vessel, and a trio of tiny trees is all it takes to say holidays. Take away these elements, and this could be the entry console in your home at any time of year.

Psst...Santa!
I looooove this large icy vessel. It's so glam:

This mantel decor says festive, but in a subtle way. The simple brass vessel filled with flowers, and several brass urchins invoke a holiday feeling. The lesson learned here: Less is More.

This fireplace feels like a winter wonderland, with snow covered topiaries and wreaths mixed with an assortment of white accessories. The flameless reallite candles add a touch of warmth and ambiance to this winter scene.

Looking for an easy to assemble holiday display? Gather a trio of vessels and fill them with decorative ornaments, such as the white pine cones and acorns used here. Keep it simple by using just two or three elements. For example, you could create a traditional scheme using gold vessels and red ornaments.

These are the key points that I took away from the inVU Decorate for the Holidays event:
  • Work with what you have, and add festive elements to your every day decor.
  • When it comes to decorating for the holidays, Less is More!
  • One statement vessel can be used in a variety of ways for every occasion.
  • The best displays use a combination of just two to three key elements.
Now, is it too early to put everything I've learned into action?

InVU Drapery Event:: Fall Trends

This past Saturday I attended an in store seminar at InVU's Mississauga location to celebrate the arrival of autumn, and discuss home decor trends for the season. The store itself is a great resource, and I love that it is a "one-stop" shop for decorators and home decor enthusiasts. The visual team at inVU always puts together fabulous in-store vignettes featuring drapery panels, cushions, mirrors, vases and decorative accessories, all of which are available for purchase.

The inVU team presented four distinct trends for autumn 2011: Carbon, Equinox, Woodland and Natural Eclectic. Here's a review of the inspirational vignettes presented at the seminar:

Trend #1: CARBON

Love, love, love this look!! As soon as I saw this vignette, I was wowed by the combination - a rich, deep navy accent wall, highlighted by gold tone metals and hits of bling. The midnight blue velvet accent chair with nail head trim detail summarizes the trend: Ooh la la!

Trend #2: Equinox

This trend is inspired by the outdoors, incorporating the rich colours of Mother Nature's fall palette: burnt orange, crimson red, harvest gold. These colours can easily be brought into the home by adding vibrant fabrics, whether it's a bold print on a wing back chair, a pair of velvet drapery panels or a kilim inspired toss cushion. Though not for the faint of heart, this time worn look is definitely warm and welcoming.

Trend #3: Woodland

The woodland trend is also nature inspired, only this trend has us seeing green. You name the shade - army, moss, chartreuse, teal - they all work beautifully together, particularly when paired with chocolate brown or warm grey. Texture also plays an important role in this trend - fur, knits, felts, velvets - these elements add warmth to the cool green palette.

Trend #4: Natural Eclectic

This colour palette trend is more subtle than the previous trends, but if you prefer to play it safe, this is a beautiful choice. Grey is the new neutral, but that doesn't mean it can't mix with the beige and taupe you already have in your home. Combine those neutrals and add a dash colour for interest; here it's a touch of blue. Again, don't forget to add texture - velvet, pony hair and faux fur all add warmth to the vignette.

I would like to thank all of the ladies at inVU for providing such an informative and inspirational seminar. Visit inVU online or drop into one of their retail locations for a visit!!

Sarah 101: Episode 11 Clutter Free Basement

This Tuesday the 11th episode of Sarah 101 aired on HGTV, which means the series will soon be drawing to a close. I will definitely miss my Tuesday night highlight!! But not to worry, there are two more episodes before it's a wrap! Tonight Sarah and Tommy tackled an 60 foot long open plan basement, converting the space from chaotic and disorganized to clutter free and multifunctional. The plan was to create a division of space which could accommodate several functions: storage, laundry, lounging and play.

Tommy and Sarah started at the fabric store, selecting a red scheme which would add charm and personality to the basement. A bold ikat fabric, an embroidered trellis pattern, a red & white stripe and a bold brush stroke print would all combine to create a lively colour story.

The basic building blocks of the room were purely neutral - a fresh coat of cream paint on the walls and bulkheads, durable broadloom on the floors throughout, a light oak finish on the storage cabinets, and a linen slipcover on the sectional sofa.

With duct work running through basements, bulkheads are a necessary evil resulting in a combination of high and low ceilings, making it difficult to use standard storage cabinets. Sarah decided that kitchen cabinetry would be the most versatile option, combining base and upper cabinets with pantry cabinets, creating an abundance of storage space.

In the secluded laundry area, a butcher block island with drawers and shelves provides even more storage while serving as a folding station and pickup zone.

In addition to the built in cabinets, Sarah & Tommy chose several key pieces to adequately furnish the lounge area: a sectional couch, an upholstered chair, a media unit, two vintage side tables, a coffee table, and a console table. Sarah's advice: Buy only what you need - more furniture would have crowded this space.

When using curtains to section off an area such as this kids playroom, use cup mounts on either end and a short center support. Fewer gaps around the edges and along the top make the curtain feel more like a room divider.

More sage Sarah Richardson advice: Use full height drapery on small basement windows. This creates the illusion of being in above ground room, especially when the drapes are closed. Family photos matted in "really red" and professionally framed provide affordable art.

What did you think of this clutter free basement?
