Sarah's House 4: Craft Room

They say there's a first time for everything, and Tuesday's second episode of Sarah's House 4 proves that to be true. This was Sarah & Tommy's very first craft room design! With just one small window in the room, Sarah wanted to keep the space light and airy by using a sky blue colour on the walls and ceiling. Pairing a pretty shade of blue with a dynamic woven fabric, the ideas started to roll.

Wall & Ceiling Colour: Para Paints, SR17, Robin's Egg
(Ceiling band painted in a 1/3 tint.)

Retro Groove Fabric

For this space, Sarah and Tommy decide to prioritize work surfaces and storage. The perfect solution is two Ikea Stenstorp kitchen islands, re-purposed for use as craft tables. Sarah and Tommy choose these islands for their sleekness: solid oak tops, stainless steel shelves, and glossy white legs. Add four brushed aluminum Spin Barstools from Crate & Barrel and you've got yourself a work zone!

Ikea kitchen cabinetry is added along the room's back wall and then topped off with a length of butcher block. This provides ample storage for crafting items, and additional work space. The large chrome Glira knobs add a modern touch to the cabinets.

This Ikea Sinka cabinet provides
additional storage for small items.

A custom bulletin board covered in the retro fabric
runs the entire width of the back wall.
A great spot to keep inspirational objects and images!

Sarah & Tommy had fun shopping at
Neat and Ikea for clever storage ideas.
These magnetic tins come in handy for storing
small objects like buttons.

Although Sarah and Tommy designed this space as a craft room, they kept in mind that the home's future owners may not have the same wants or needs. All of the furniture can easily be removed and the room can be converted back to a fourth bedroom.

  1. I love this craft room! I would like to reproduce parts of it, but can't find the Ikea crafting tables/kitchen islands. Can you help me?

  2. Hi Anonymous,
If you click on the word Stensorp in the above script (paragraph 2: look for "...Ikea Stensorp kitchen islands..."), it will link you directly to the Canadian Ikea page for the kitchen islands.

  3. Hi, I love the pin-board fabric, and have tried everything to get a sample of it. The company credited in the shopping guide no longer carries it, and P/ Kaufmann, who manufacturer it have failed to reply to any of my several emails. I've found several companies who can order it for me, however they cannot get samples. And the design showrooms won't send them either. Help!

    1. Hi Clementine,
I've been trying to find this for you, but no luck. I know I saw it at Designer Fabrics on Queen Street West here in Toronto, but that was quite awhile ago. They may be able to find some for you if you contact them. There's always ebay, although it is unlikely that you would be able to get a sample from an ebay seller. Good luck!!

  4. Thanks, Pam. I contacted Designer Fabrics and they said that they do not have the fabric anymore. I guess I'm just out of luck, or need to custom order it sight unseen, which I'm a bit nervous about, as I need 35 yards!

  5. I love the wall system in the craft room. Is it from Ikea? Mostly the chrome rods mounted to the wall with the small storage containers hanging from it. What specifically do I search?

    1. Hello A,

The wall system is indeed from Ikea. Search GRUNDTAL kitchen series and you'll find what you're looking for.

      Thanks for reading,
      ~Pam
